What Is Static Calibration?

Static Calibration is a parked-vehicle process that aligns a windshield-mounted ADAS camera with fixed targets placed at known positions. The camera views the targets while the vehicle stays still. Calibration software checks the camera’s image and adjusts its aim so driver assistance features can read the road as designed.

Key Takeaways About Static Calibration

  • The vehicle stays still during the target-based procedure.
  • Targets give the camera a known visual reference.
  • Static calibration isn’t the same as road-based dynamic calibration.

How Static Calibration Works

Static Calibration uses a vehicle bay, calibration targets, and software. The vehicle sits on a level surface, and targets are positioned in front of it. The target pattern gives the camera a fixed visual reference.

A technician checks the camera view through the scan tool. The system compares the target image with the camera’s expected position. Small adjustments may correct the camera aim or confirm that the current aim meets the vehicle’s specifications.

The windshield, camera bracket, vehicle position, and target placement all affect the result. A ADAS target may be a printed panel or another approved aiming surface. Static calibration does not require road driving during the aiming process.

Static and Dynamic Calibration

Dynamic Calibration uses road conditions and vehicle movement to help the system learn its view. Some vehicles call for one method, while others use both methods.

When we perform windshield-mounted ADAS camera calibration, we inspect the camera area and confirm that the windshield and bracket sit correctly. We position the target according to the vehicle’s service data, then check the scan tool for a completed calibration result.

Static Calibration in Practice: A Real-World Example

After a windshield replacement, a vehicle’s forward-facing camera may need Static Calibration. The vehicle stays parked while a target is placed in front of it, and the camera system checks its alignment.
