What Is a Side Curtain Airbag?

Side Curtain Airbag is a vehicle safety cushion that deploys from the roof area beside the windows during certain side impacts or rollovers. The cushion spreads along the side glass to help shield occupants from contact with the window, door frame, or outside objects. It works with seat belts and other airbag systems.

Key Takeaways About Side Curtain Airbag

  • It runs along the vehicle’s side window area.
  • Window work must protect the airbag’s deployment path.
  • It is not the same as a front airbag.

How Side Curtain Airbag Works

A man works inside a car, using a screwdriver to inspect a deployed side curtain airbag

A Side Curtain Airbag stays folded inside the roof rail, headliner, or upper side trim. Crash sensors send a signal when conditions match a deployment event. An inflator fills the cushion, and the cushion drops beside the window area.

The airbag covers the side glass and nearby openings during deployment. Its fabric, seams, and mounting points are designed for that path. A side curtain airbag differs from a seat-mounted side airbag, which comes from the seat and focuses on the torso area. Side window replacement requires attention to nearby trim, clips, wiring, and airbag clearance.

From the WindshieldRepairKirklandwa.com team

When we handle a side window replacement, we check the surrounding trim and the airbag’s location before removing parts. We protect the deployment path during glass removal and installation. Our team also checks that trim sits correctly after the work.

Side Curtain Airbag in Practice: A Real-World Example

A vehicle with a broken rear side window may have a side curtain airbag above that opening. During side window replacement, the technician works around the roof trim and keeps the airbag area clear.
