What Is a Rock Chip?

A rock chip is a small area of windshield damage caused by a stone or other road debris. The impact can create a central pit, short cracks, or a circular mark in the glass. Rock chips vary in shape and depth, and some can be repaired before the damage spreads.

Local relevance: Kirkland's wet winters can hide small windshield damage under water or road spray, so a chip may be harder to spot during rainy driving.

Key Takeaways About Rock Chip

  • A chip usually has a visible impact point.
  • Early repair may help limit crack growth.
  • A chip is not the same as a long crack.

How Rock Chip Works

A man uses a soldering tool on a dark tablet, while a woman watches beside a laptop and a “ROCK CHIP” sign

Rock chip damage begins when road debris strikes the windshield. The impact removes a small piece of glass and may send short cracks outward. Heat, cold, vibration, and continued driving can place stress around the damaged area.

A repair technician checks the impact point and the paths around it. The technician cleans the damaged area, applies resin, and draws air from the damaged space. The resin fills the open paths and then cures inside the glass. The finished mark may remain visible, but the repair can restore strength around the damaged area.

Some chips have more than one pattern. A bullseye has a round outer ring, while a star break has several thin lines. A chip that has reached the windshield edge may need a different service.
